The Tube
London’s underground was finished in 1863 and was the
first system of its kind anywhere in the world.
Exploring London by tube allows fast and easy access to the
heart of the city without worrying about traffic jams or getting
lost and gives you the freedom to roam at leisure. Master the
tube and you have the key to understanding the capital. |

Who uses the tube?
The tube is a part of life for all Londoners and visitors to
the capital. On average three million people use the tube every
single day. There are 275 stations serving over 408 km (253
miles) of railway. |

How Much Does It Cost?
The cheapest way of getting around London is to buy a Travelcard.
These can be purchased for a day, a week, a month and a year
and are valid on buses, tubes, overland trains and the DLR.
Prices differ between zones, but most visitors to the centre
only require zones 1-2. Extensions can be bought for zones 3–6.
Heathrow airport is in zone 6. Gatwick and Stansted airports
are outside the Travelcard area but overland services easily
connect them to the tube.
One-day, off-peak, Travelcard: £4.30 zones 1- 2, £
4.70 zones 1-4
7 day zone 1 only card: £17
7 day zone 1-2 card: £20.20
7 day zone 1-6 card: £38.00.
1 month zones 1-6 card: £147.10
These are 2004 prices, fares are reviewed every January.

Buses
London’s famous red buses are running better than ever
thanks to the new Congestion Charge. Pick up a map and a bus
pass and hop on board.
Night buses operate to and from Trafalgar Square and are the
cheapest and easiest way to travel round the capital once the
tube shuts.
Conductors collect fares on the older buses or cash is paid
directly to the driver. Any single journey including central
London (Zone 1) is £1.00. Any journey in the rest of London
is £0.70 and children pay a flat fare of £0.40.
The most cost effective way to travel by bus is to buy a book
of Saver tickets. A book of six single bus tickets can be bought
in advance from newsagents or post offices for £3.90 for
an adult and £2.10 for a child. They can be used by you
or by anyone you wish to give them to. They are not valid for
tube travel. |

Taxis
Travel through the capital in style in a traditional Black Cab
(also called a Hackney Carriage). Drivers are required to pass
a rigorous geography exam of London’s streets called the
Knowledge. London cabbies are renowned for their discretion
and tales of life in the capital.
An illuminated yellow light on the top will indicate when the
cab is available for hire. They can be pre-booked by phone,
procured at a stand or hailed on the street.
All London's Black Taxi Cabs are metered. Calculation of fares
is highly complex. Only estimates can be made in advance as
traffic conditions and time of day may affect prices. There
is a flat rate fare of £1.40 and drivers expect a tip
of at least 10%.

Minicabs
Minicabs are a cheaper, more flexible option. There is no meter
and it is important to agree on the fare beforehand to avoid
being flagrantly over charged.
Important changes are being introduced to regulate unmarked
minicabs and their drivers but the scheme will not be complete
until about 2005. In the meantime always ask to see the driver’s
identification and order the car either over the phone or from
the office.
For lone women travellers the safest option is Lady Cabs: 0800
917 8683. |

say our Members ... |
| Maybe it is the only way to work legally in Great Britain. In Romania, the engineering designer no longer exists as a profession. There is no wonder that we live such an unfulfilled life. In fact, I miss engineering!
